Monday Mischief: Art Imitates Life or Vice Versa?

Rita had to go to the vet on Friday for her annual checkup. (And she was super healthy! Well... still waiting for her blood work results, but eyes, ears, heart, teeth, weight were all deemed "just great" by the vet.) Anyway, our vet's office has a sign posted with the Top 10 items ingested by pets.
Thanks to my sis for the photo.
It's a bit hard to see, but the top 10 items in order of popularity are: socks, underwear, pantyhose (do ladies still wear those? Maybe this is an old list.), rocks, balls, chew toys, corn cobs (yikes!), bones, hair ties, and sticks.

That's a lotta mischief your pup can get into!

I've had this photo for a while but saved it to share today to celebrate the fact that the ebook version of What the Dog Ate is on sale through Wed, October 2 for 99 cents! You can get it via Amazon, Barnes & Noble, or via Smashwords if you have a Sony ereader or other device. (If you don't have a Kindle, you can download the Kindle App for free for either a tablet or PC and read ebooks that way.)

Since What the Dog Ate opens with a woman finding out her dog ate panties that aren't hers, I have to highlight item 2 - underwear! Our angel Abby used to like to chew on our undies (the hubs still has one pair with a hole in that he won't let me throw away because he thinks of them as a reminder of her. I'm sure the guys at the gym wonder about him... Sigh.). Luckily she never actually ate a pair!

I also want to highlight item 1 and a funny story that is similar to the opening of my book. When I was trying to find the origin of this list I came across this post which credits it as originally being from Dr. Chris Duke, a vet from Mississippi. He added the following info about dogs eating socks:
"Socks. That’s so common, it’s not surprising. Foot odor is very attractive to dogs, and socks get thrown loosely on the floor, particularly by men. I remember a time when I was at the Auburn University veterinary school when a dog had a monogrammed sock removed from its intestine. When the surgeon called the woman who owned the dog after surgery, her first question was “what are the initials?” Her second question was, “Can I come and get that sock so someone else doesn’t see it?” Yikes, don’t want to get in the middle of that one."
Hmmm... Wonder if her hubby ever found out about those initialed socks??

If you've already bought/read What the Dog Ate, thank you! (And please consider leaving a review on Amazon. Always hate to ask for those, but they are super important for indie authors like myself!) If you know some friends who have ereaders, please pass the news of the sale along to them. Thank you!

Has your dog ever swallowed an item on that top 10 list?

Thanks to Snoopy’s Dog Blog, Alfie’s Blog, and My Brown Newfies for hosting Monday Mischief!

  1. Very interesting list. I have heard of dogs eating all of those items. Some did not make it sadly (socks and pantyhose are really bad news). Glad you are sharing it.

The monogrammed socks actually reminded me exactly of your book! I hope people buy it!

  2. Interesting list! Bones and sticks would definitely be on the list in our house, but haven't resulted in any vet visits.

  3. He has eaten a bone before but luckily it didn't result in a vet visit. Who has monogrammed socks?

  4. OMD that is scary. Glad Rita is A OK. Have a marvellous Monday.

    Best wishes Molly

  5. I don't think they have eaten anything on that list, maybe chewed a bit of stick. But I do know a dog who ate panty hose, (yes we still wear them). Not a good thing and required surgery.

Freighter ate parts of a rug he chewed once...

    Have a great Monday!

  6. Years ago my tripawd, Bennie, must've decided he didn't care for Ted Nugent. He took a bite out of 2 of Nugent's lps. I found the pieces though, so they weren't actually eaten. Lucy used to like to eat rocks :-( Had to keep an eye on her outside. Poor thing, she was always on a diet and always hungry. These days Rosie has a real affinity for the dog daddy's socks. No actual eating, but teeny holes... I keep reminding him - if he'd pick up his socks, this would not be a problem!

  7. Fortunately, my guys, despite being piggy corgis, haven't eaten any of those items. Jimmy is a champion of finding discarded chicken wings and those can big a problem. He's got a pretty good "drop-it!", but has managed to swallow a few. That scares me!

  8. The sock story is just too funny. We've been lucky that none of our dogs have ever been real chewers - nothing's ever gone missing like that. (If your dropped by earlier and our comments were broken...they are fixed now)

  9. Yay for a healthy visit for Rita!

My husband and my son always leave there socks on the floor, it drives me crazy because Leory is known for eating things he shouldn't!

  10. So far the only thing we eat is DAD's DRESSER and only gangsta 1 and 2 do that.

  11. I am so glad these guys haven't done that. We got to Utah last night, and the book is here. Horray. I can't wait to start reading it. THANKS!

  12. I'm happy to hear Rita had a great checkup! That poster is a clever way to promote health insurance for dogs. Every time Wrigs has a GI upset, I try to think of anything he might have eaten that he shouldn't have. So far, that hasn't been the case, but it's always something to consider with dogs (and cats!). Thanks for the heads-up about What the Dog Ate!

  13. The woman with the monogrammed socks - hilarious!

My brother in law had a rott that ate corn cobs and powdered laundry detergent. I had a son who ate dog food. I switched to a better brand of dog food.

  14. It is messed up what dogs will eat. My friend's rottie needed emergency surgery to have a very large roofing nail removed from her belly.

Pretty neat that the weird things our dogs eat inspired you to write a novel! It's funny where our inspiration comes from some times! :-)

  15. Three times in the course of writing my blog I've said that this is the last post I'll do on stuff dogs eat, but then I find another story that is even weirder. I think the cell phone is probably the strangest. The x-ray showed the exact outline of it. It cost a few thousand dollars to get it back, but of course digestive enzymes took their toll.

My dogs have never eaten anything strange. Everything gets a thorough sniff test

  16. Great picture to go with your book! As you know Brooks ate a corncob and it cost us $3000 to have it removed! Good luck with the sale1

  17. Thankfully not that I KNOW of. I was talking about Delilah's exploits the last time I was at the vets and she was telling me what HER dog ate. I felt much better. Her dog has eaten way worse things than Delilah.

For 99 cents EVERYONE should download this book!!

  18. Great to hear that Rita had a perfect check-up!!

The number one weird thing that dogs eat didn't make the list... POOP! Cat poop, other dogs' poop, their own poop, goose poop... Not all dogs do it, and even those that do don't do it all the time. But it's definitely the #1 thing. I guess the list was only for things that might have to be surgically removed. Fortunately, my two haven't eaten any of those things... but they do occasionally swallow *pieces* of whatever toys they're obliterating at the moment... just not a whole toy.
Love the story about the monogrammed sock!

P.S. I'd get your book if I didn't already have it! :) Will talk them both up on the blog soon (and review at Amazon)... gotta get a chance to delve into them first!

  19. I can't stop laughing! I am looking forward to reading your book.

  20. Luckily, no! We've always tried to be pretty diligent about keeping stuff like that out of the dog's reach. But our late golden Moses used to always steal socks and underwear out of the laundry basket if I left it unattended for even 5 minutes. Thank goodness he never ate any of it. He liked to just carry things like that around and then just lay with it under his chin! I remember when my sister's dog ate one of my nephew's socks at a family get together, and it was DAYS before that sock came back up! She was pretty worried for a while there!

  21. Yay for the ebook being on sale! :)

I don't think I've eaten any of those, I'm not much of a swallower, I do like to steal Dad's socks, but just to get mum to chase me, works pretty well! :)

    Wags to all

    Your pal Snoopy :)

  22. Items left on floor always ends up in one of our dogs mouth including socks. Luckily they just want our attention. It always seems to be play time at our house. LOL
Love the funny stories. Looking forward to reading more.

  23. just tweeted this because the "art imitates life" aspect is just too spot on!

  24. Yikes, can't believe what dogs eat. Actually, in our house, it is more what the cat eats, than us dogs.

  25. My friend and a vet I used to work with had a dog who was obsessed with socks. He had to have 2 or 3 surgeries for sock removal in his life. I think he just passed away last week unfortunately. It's funny that we both posted about this today lol.

  26. Pawsome list - sounds like a menu from a gourmet restaurant to me! *waggy tail*

  27. I have had or known a dog that has eaten everything on that poster... I will, however, not name names. All was eventually well and Jason learned to always put his dirty clothes in the hamper! :)

  28. So happy Coco doesn't eat stuff like this! She just eats everything else...good to know though!
