Monday Mischief: Little Dickens or Mother's Angel?

Rita and her cousin, Reggie, had another play date recently, and it was as wild as the last time.

Here they are playing sort of a backwards game of peekaboo:

Even with all the wild play for about 45 minutes, Reggie still found the energy to get up to a little mischief... Nibbling on plants....
"Mmmm. Succulents. They're so... succulent!"

And trying to eat bark...
His bark (addiction) is worse than his bite.
He was a filthy pup by the end of it!

But... When he's all cleaned up, doesn't he look like a mother's angel, complete with little gray fluffy wings and everything?

He even has an extra set of "wings" on his butt. Or maybe he's like those old 1950s Chevys with the fins.

So, what do you think... Little dickens?* Or mother's angel?

I wrote a guest post for Digital Book Today confessing that I'm a slow reader. If you want to stop by and check it out, it's right here:  In Defense of the Slow Reader.

*I tried to look up the origin of the phrase little dickens (apparently it's just from dickens being a euphemism for devil; nothing to do with Charles Dickens!) and ended up going down quite the internet rabbit hole of why we call people named Richard "Dick."

Thanks to my sis for the "angel" pics, and thanks Snoopy’s Dog Blog, Alfie’s Blog, and My Brown Newfies for hosting Monday Mischief!

  7. Well, I just went down the Richard rabbit hole. Where I learned it's the same reason why William is shortened to Bill and Robert is shortened to Bob.

Oh, and I love those Chevy tail fins.

Thanks for starting my Monday off with great entertainment! :-D

    1. Yes, interesting isn't it? And I read that it's also how Margaret ends up as Peg or Peggy.

  8. Seeing as how Reggie is a one year Cardigan, he's 99% little dickens, 1% little angel. (Mother Hen Alert: Be careful of that bark, it can cause intestinal blockage very easily!)

I used to work with a Richard. Dick was a very appropriate nickname for this Richard in his case ;-)

  11. Reggie is a real cutie pie, but why DO we call people named Richard "Dick"?

    1. What I read said it was because really common names were often shortened, so Richard to Rick, and then the first letter would be swapped out to differentiate folks, so Rick would sometimes become Dick. Same with Robert to Rob to Bob, William to Will to Bill.

    2. Oh! That makes total sense. Thanks!

  14. I shall always go for angel, with the exception for Delilah who is definitely a dickens! And now I suspect I'll be looking for that rabbit hole. :-) As you've piqued my curiosity.

  15. He is an Angel! I remember Dakota's "bark" eating days too! Not fun! I need to read your "Slow Reader" article, I actually was always a FAST reader who never remembered what they read afterwards, so now I force myself to be much, much slower

  16. lol @ bark addiction!! Over here we say "What the dickens!" instead of "what the devil". Though it's a bit old fashioned!! Can't say I've heard of little dickens! But then I don't get around much lol ;)

    1. "What the dickens" does sound "terribly British" to me. But here, some folks will say something like "why you little dickens" or "you scared the dickens out of me" - but it's not very common and kind of old-fashioned I guess.

  17. Reggie's mom here. Thanks, all of you who voted him an angel. I mostly think he's an angel, but when he gets the dickens in him there's "hell to pay." (His pop's name is Dickens, so it is appropriate for him to have some of that in him.)

    1. Oh yeah, meant to say that his dad was named Dickens and forgot! (Wonder if he was named Dickens after the author, or after the euphemism for devil??)

  18. Taryn's percentages on a one-year old Cardi's behavior cracked me up. We constantly assess the percentages of angel vs. devil time. We're actually in about 70% angel rate most of the time right now, and improving as we go.

  19. Angelic! Look at that face. Love his "wings."

  20. Angel for sure. Also I had an uncle Dick and a cousin Dickie. Then when Dickie went to college he became "Richard" and never went back.

    1. Wow - surprised he survived high school as Dickie! I'd have probably switched to Richard sooner. :)

  25. He is so friggen adorable. Toby has "angel's wings" too - and he's no angel. So I'd have to vote "little dickens."
