Wordless Wednesday: Dog-crazy Spam

You know you're a dog-lover when one day's junk mail looks like this: donation requests from the ASPCA, the local Humane Society, and Best Friends.

BTW... I believe I've mentioned before that I'm not a huge fan of the ASPCA. You can look them up on Charity Navigator and decide for yourself, but on top of not being thrilled with how much of the money they get simply goes back toward raising more money, I also had a very negative interaction with one of their representatives before - long story - so they don't get any money from me. But it doesn't keep them from relentlessly asking!

Anyway, this was a record at our house for dog-related mail.

Is this what your mail looks like?

Need Another Reminder to Give Cancer the Paw?
It's almost time again for the next installment of the Give Cancer the Paw blog hop! It's next Thursday, February 6th. I hope you'll join me and co-host Peggy Frezon of Peggy's Pet Place. You can grab the badge from my sidebar. Don't worry... I'll remind you again!

  1. I don't really get dog spam. When I donate, it's usually at small local places and in person or at a pet store.

  2. I know what you mean about the doggy spam mail!
We'll be participating in Give Cancer The Paw Blog Hop if we can remember!

  3. I get quite a lot of mail addressed to me - paper and email. My momma has it all directed to a post office box so it doesn't spam-a-lot BOL!

  4. We don't get dog spam but we get tons of other crapola! It keeps my shredder humming! : )

  5. That is a record but we get those too... and a lot of other general animal rights charities too. It's disturbing to open the mail box and have a photograph of a pathetic caged pig or chained lamb fall out! But, if I don't want to see those pictures I should donate money to make such horrible treatment of animals stop, right?

  6. Luckily we don't get unwanted mail but lots of junk flyers which go straight in the recycling. Well after I have ripped them up. Have a wonderful Wednesday.
    Best wishes Molly

  7. I know how you feel about the ASPCA. Please note that the Humane Society of the United States isn't much better. I can't tell you how many people are horrified to learn that NONE of the money they donate to HSUS (after watching the Sarah McLachlan commercial, no doubt) comes to my shelter. Seriously, HSUS is not affiliated with any shelter, even if it has the name "Humane Society". If you want to help your local shelter, give to them directly. Simply put: if you want to support the cause give to the national organizations (HSUS/ASPCA/PeTA, etc.); if you want to support the animals, give to the local organizations (shelters, rescues, spay/neuter programs, etc.) BTW, there's nothing wrong with doing both (I do.)

And on the subject of supporting locally: call before writing a check. Our local Humane Society wants cash because they have contracts with various vendors. I DON'T want cash. I have a tiny shelter run by the city. When people give me cash it goes into the "general fund" and is more likely to buy snacks for a city council meeting than dog treats. I prefer people to donate food/toys/treats/towels or make a donation to the local vet on my behalf so I can buy meds and treatment for the animals in my care.

    1. I don't understand why they can't use the cash donated to buy treats for the dogs rather than for the city council meeting?

And I don't give to the HSUS, only the local one, as well as other local independent shelters - who also send me donation requests but not on that particular day. If I get hit up by all of them in the same day, I'll have to do another photo. Not to mention all the dog-related catalogs I get!

  8. LOL. It's my own fault for giving my dogs "people names," but sometimes even they get the same sort of spam mail!

  9. I noticed ours has been picking up lately. We tend to donate to local dog shelters we know so there efforts don't work out well for them.

  10. It looks very similar to my junk mail. Even my email inbox is flooded with dog related fare. :-)

  11. One of the joys of not getting mail, no junk!

  12. Yes, I get all those and then some (but probably not in one day!). Way back, before I knew better, I had donated to all three of those. No more though! ASPCA and HSUS are big crooks and Best Friends isn't much better. I give to local rescue and the Nat'l Cardigan Welsh Corgi rescue fund.

    1. Well, I disagree about Best Friends. I like what they did for the Vick dogs and they have also given lifetime sanctuary to dogs from the local shelter where I volunteer who weren't being adopted, so I think it's a good place. I also give to local groups.

  15. Yes! I get gobs of that stuff, and I'm not actually sure why? I only donate to local orgs.

  16. I have the same problem in the UK with the RSPCA, even though I got my lovely rescue kitty from them. They are getting far too political and less interested in the cat/dog on the street. I support a local no-kill rescue where I know the people and the work they do.

BTW I finished Rescue me, Maybe. Really loved it and gave it 5 stars on Goodreads. I wrote a review, but lost it due to a power outage!! Want to read your first one now :)

  17. Mom gets a lot of that junk mail too, but not three in one day. The ASPCA isn't really in our area, so we only get mail from them, don't have to see them.

  18. yes I get all that in the mail and in my email inbox too!!!!

  19. I get some spam like that, not much though. But our vet likes to send us things like that lol
I love your header btw very cute!
Thanks so much for coming by my blog!

  20. My goodness... we've never gotten that much snail mail pet spam! That's pretty impressive! They could at least have included a treat in a packet or something... ;)

  21. No, my mail isn't that cool! Well, not my junk mail, anyway. The sad part is that my dogs get more real mail than I do! And I'm not a fan of the ASPCA, either.

  22. My mail consists of baby/ parenting / and dog magazines lol and coupons. I agree with you about the ASPCA

  23. I agree with you. I am no fan of the ASPCA. When I used to say this, I usually got the blank stare or the you-can't-mean-that stare. Based on the comments to your post, it looks like the word is getting out that there are better organizations for animal welfare.

  24. Oh yes, that junk mail looks familiar, and I often get more than one in a day! I haven't given to the ASPCA or most other national organizations for quite a while, yet they still keep trying. I sometimes think if they spent less money on mailings, they'd have more for the important things. I pretty much only give to local organizations, with the exception of Best Friends and MAF.
I have my post for the next Give Cancer the Paw hop all planned!

  25. The pet charities are dwarfed by the wildlife groups. I've had to decide which to support and don't open the rest. But the volume of mail is nothing compared to the emails.

  26. I don't get a lot of pet spam, but I do get it every now and then. I think I'm one of the few people who appreciates the awareness the ASPCA raises and one of their vets helped me create my health pages when I first started. She also helped me make it through the death of our puppy by explaining the ins and outs of canine parvovirus. We were on the phone for nearly 2 hours for two weekends.

She's no longer with the ASPCA so I wonder if their reputation has something to do with her departure. I just wish these powerful organizations could focus on the animals.
