Monday Mischief: The Case of the Missing Bone

Rita's Nylabone had been missing for weeks.

This is said bone:
Rita's well-loved Nylabone

I looked everywhere for it. Or... almost everywhere. I looked in the obvious doggy-ish places - under the bed, under the sofa, under the car seats. (We take the bone along with us when we go visit our 86-year-old friend, so that Rita has something to do there once the biscuits are handed out and gone.)

I figured it was lost for good. Thought maybe she took it out back and it fell down our steeply sloped backyard, never to be seen again.

Then Friday night, we were getting ready to go to a Local Author Exhibit* at the San Diego Public Library downtown - and I found the bone. In my purse!

I don't carry a huge black-hole-of-a-purse that things disappear into. It's a relatively small purse. Here it is next to the bone for reference.
You'd think I would have noticed it, no?
I've been carrying this bone around in my purse for weeks. It came along out to dinner with my girlfriends last week. It made me realize that the only things I reach into my purse for are: my credit cards/money (in their special pocket), my cell phone (ditto w/ the special pocket), and my lip balm (ditto again). Regular moms I imagine find things like pacifiers, loose Cheerios, baby wipes, etc. in their purses. Dog moms find bones.

Rita was just happy we found it.

* Kinda fun to see my book in a case at the library! There were so many local authors there! It was a very big exhibit.
Not a great pic cuz of the glare, but there's my book! Under glass in the library!

Have you ever found something of your dog's in a strange place? Or do you carry anything specific to being a dog-mom around in your purse?

  1. That is hilarious!!! I am so disappointed that you didn't discover it when you were out to dinner with friends! ;)

I always have dog poop bags in my back pockets. And treats in my front pockets. I don't carry a purse so sometimes my credit card or cash has little dog biscuit crumbs on them but I really don't think too much about it. It seems normal to me!

    1. I'm always finding dog treat crumbs in my pockets too!

My girlfriends are all animal lovers too (although, a dog person, a cat person, and a bird person!) so they probably would have understood. :)

  2. A couple of years ago I brought home three Nylabones. "Mmmm Plastic bones", the dogs all said until i told them they were nylon. "Mmmmn nylon bones, something this good we need to save for later." They went off in three different directions and I've never seen the Nylabones since that day.

  3. It's not unusual when you are a Corgi mom to find bits of dog hair in your purse and pockets. Oh my, I am so anxious for those days to return!

  5. Our nylabones look exactly like that!! They like to chew one end off! I found a MilkBone dog biscuit in my pocket of my jacket when I was traveling between Rome and Florence (Italy!) that was the best... i ran up to all my friends saying "Look what I just found in my pocket!" and they all cracked up laughing... except I cried, since I really missed my dogs. I get separation anxiety when I travel without them ha ha. I always have an extra leash and a roll of poop bags in my pocket or purse!

  9. LOL! I have found dog treats in my purse, my coat and pants pockets and everywhere else, but I have yet to put a bone in my purse. I'm not saying it couldn't happen. Just that it hasn't happened... yet. :)

Congrats on your book being highlighted in the bookcase! How cool is that? I am so in awe of you writing a book and making it a success. I'm waiting for your next one!

    1. Dog treats and poop bags seem to be popular (pupular?) items for turning up in pockets!

Thanks re: the book. As for the next one... I'm working on it! Have it out with some beta readers right now. Got some good feedback so far. Phew!

  12. Oh my dog! HILARIOUS! Your dog needs better bones. Jones bones. And I've read that book! Good book!

Let's see - my purse has green clackers, like I had when I was a kid? Those clear balls on a string that you clack together? My teenage son likes telling his friends that his mom carries her balls in her purse. Quite frankly, I like saying it, too.

  14. I saw this on Facebook and thought it was funny, maybe Rita put it in there in case you got bored? Mum loves that when she's out somewhere or away she occasionally finds a little piece of my fur and says that I've come with her! Dad just rolls his eyes :)

    Hope you're having a fun day :)

    Your pal Snoopy :)
