Mirth Watch Thursday: My Furry Valentine

Happy Valentine's Day everypawdy! I have to start by saying, I'm not a huge fan of V-Day. I mean, it's cute for the kids and the chocolate tie-in is good, but beyond that I can't get super excited about it. (I'm not much of a romantic in most of the traditional ways - and yes, I was single and bitter and I wore green on V-Day as a protest for many years.)

Now, having gotten that off my chest... Rita - as I mentioned the other day - has a long-distance boyfriend, Rocket, who she's exchanging V-day gifts/cards with. (I know that sounds silly, but you probably noticed, we're big on silly around here.) I wanted to take some special photos of Rita for her b.f., so here are some of the outtakes as well as the ones that went to Rocket:
We tried some "flower behind the ear" shots, but they didn't work...

...they didn't work at all.
And we tried some red silky PJs shots, but they didn't start off so well...

...until we hit on this one. Winner! Cover shot for Rocket's card!
Seriously, who wouldn't want that cute little girl to be his/her furry Valentine?

This one was deemed too sexy, even for her b.f.:
A little too much "come hither" look in the eyes there. And the little scar above her right eye just adds to her "bad-girl" vibe. (Yes, the dog is sexier than I am. I can admit that.)

We also did a series of tasteful nudes. They're VERY tastefully done, so I hope no one is shocked!
The back of Rocket's card. Hope he likes it!
Turns out Rocket did like the card - very much. His mom took these pics of him with the card and posted them to CometDog.com (a site for "sharing, support & shenanigans"! Mostly shenanigans.)
Hooray! He said yes!
Rocket discovers the "tasteful nude" on the back.

Rita is so happy to be called beautiful. (Her foster mom said she was "average looking".)
Ah, young furry love. It's in the air today. (Well, there's always a lot of fur in the air at our house...)

My Funny, Furry Valentine
Writing this post made me realize that I have no idea how Frank Sinatra's My Funny Valentine song goes, except for the opening line, so I looked up the lyrics. (If you're like me and don't remember the whole tune, you can hear it on YouTube here.) What I found was an insult-fest, parading as a love song:

My funny Valentine (yes, that's me. I try to make 'em laugh!)
Sweet comic Valentine (okay, I'm with you so far...)
You make me smile with my heart (and also with your mouth, no?)
Your looks are laughable (Um, wait - how's that?)
Unphotographable (Well, that's just mean.)
Yet you're my favorite work of art (Lose the "yet" and I'm with you on this part...)

Is your figure less than Greek? (Wow, the compliments just keep on coming!)
Is your mouth a little weak? (Not as weak as this "love" song, Frankie!)
When you open it to speak,
Are you smart? (You probably don't want to hear what's going to come out of my mouth when I open it now, Frank.)

But don't change a hair for me (I didn't plan on it.)
Not if you care for me (Not sure I do after hearing this song.)
Stay little Valentine stay
Each day is Valentine's day

One of the commenters on the YouTube link above said this song makes her "melt" and she knows many women would love to have their man think about them this way. I'm going to pass on "my man" questioning my smarts and telling  me I'm unphotographable.. Might make for an ugly V-day around here.

But...since Rita is a sweet, comic Valentine, and she does make me smile with my heart (and also with my mouth) and since I do want her to stay, I guess it's an appropriate song for my furry, funny Valentine.

Happy Valentine's Day to you and all your funny, furry Valentines!

  1. Unfortunately Valentine's Day has become more a day to feature greed and guilt than the innocent day it once was. Thanks for bringing back the innocence.

(And no, it isn't at all silly)

    1. The sell, sell, sell/buy, buy, buy is a bit much on VDay, isn't it?

      Thanks for stopping by!

  3. Great post! The photos are adorable.

Sadly, Valentine's Day has definitely morphed in to yet another cringe-worthy greed/guilt fest.

    1. Cringe-worthy is a perfect way to describe it! We used to live in Bermuda and it was a ridiculous competition there. Roses are super expensive (because of being brought in on container ships) so it really seemed like a competition (one we did not join in) to see which gal had the biggest bouquet of roses on her desk at work. Ridiculous. Really turned me off the whole holiday even more than I'd already been. (Okay, V-day rant over!)

Having said that... Have a happy non-greed/non-guilt-fest Vday!

I hope you had a lovely day, love your pictures,

  11. I am DYING laughing over here! The tasteful nudes are very nice, but the song lyrics! I've never cared for the crooners, but I may need to revisit Sinatra's music, just the lyrics. That's hilarious!

As for V-Day, my Hunny was out of town. We rarely celebrate. But I had a nice lunch with my mother, which, in some ways, is much better than celebrating with my Hunny. In some ways. :)

    1. I know - can you believe those lyrics?? Telling your love she's "unphotographable"?? Nice.

We don't really do much celebrating either. I made the hub's favorite meal (luckily he's super easy - all-day spaghetti!) and that was about the extent of it. Exciting times!
